Me: Sir where is B-57?
Raju: All the houses have random numbers, if one house house is B block then the next house is F block
Me: (Completely surprised) Then how do you get to someone's home
Raju: People recognize each other by name and face, not by house number. If you want to deliver something then leave it with this shop keeper, the person would collect from him
This really left me dumb struck and forced me to think hard. People with random house numbers and multiple Identity cards all with different details, I realized that we are in for some huge challenge as we begin our operations here. The biggest issue that we face in most places like Shahbad Dairy is lack of any structure and unorganized which makes penetration even more tough.
We have started doing an elaborate survey which would help us understand the people and the community better. The survey includes questions relating to their income/expenditure patters, health issues, sanitation & hygiene, water and advocacy. The idea is to first understand issues and to make informed decisions rather than directly jumping to solutions. We have started with block B & F Block which has approx. 1800 Jhuggis (houses). Once we are complete with this block then we would be numbering all houses in serial order and eventually cards would be issued to each family with their unique ID. This card would become an important medium for all the services that we would offer eventually.
